CASCADE LOCKS, Ore. — The Forest Service has issued its annual reminder not to jump off Punchbowl Falls in the Eagle Creek area of the Columbia River Gorge.

If caught jumping, the fine is $300.

Also, visitors making the 80-foot leap often suffer neck and back injuries in water shallower than it appears.

“We continue to see tragic, avoidable incidents at that local every year,” said Matt English, Hood River County sheriff.

His office responds to an average of 10 search and rescue calls a year in the Eagle Creek area.

Dogs at Eagle Creek trail and parking lot also must be leashed. Several pet rescues have occurred in recent years, putting rescuers at risk.
