A 29-year-old man on an outing with his family died Saturday in a drowning incident in the East Fork of the Lewis River north of Battle Ground, according to Clark County Fire & Rescue.

The man had gone under in the swimming area at Lewisville Park and had been under water for three to five minutes when rescue personnel were dispatched at 6:06 p.m., according to a statement from CCF&R Division Chief Michael Jackson.

Rescue swimmers pulled the man from the water and attempted to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The man’s name was not released.

Jackson urged that anyone spending time at lakes and streams use extreme caution, wear flotation devices and remember that water is often colder and deeper than it might seem.
