A masked gunman reportedly shot and killed a dog and fired at the dog’s owner Saturday during an apparent burglary in Woodland. Police hope the public can help them find a person of interest in the case.

Woodland police were dispatched at about 3:15 p.m. Saturday to a home at 9553 Old Pacific Highway, according to a news release from the Woodland Police Department.

When officers arrived, they found the victim’s black Lab dead in the shop on the property. The dog sustained what appeared to be gunshot wounds, police said.

The 59-year-old victim told police that he woke up when he heard gunshots in his shop, and when he went to investigate, the suspect, who was wearing a bandana, fired at the victim but missed, according to the news release. The burglar likely fled on foot, police said.

A Washougal K-9 unit was called to the scene but was unable to find a suspect. The Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office and the Washington State Patrol’s Major Crimes Unit also assisted at the scene.

Police are asking for the public’s help in finding 63-year-old transient Thomas Richard Nash, who they said is a “person of interest” in their investigation.

Nash and the man who was shot at “have been at odds recently over residency issues,” according to the news release.

Police said Nash is likely living in the Woodland area in his white 1999 Ford full-sized van, with Oregon license plate number WWV592.

He is believed to be armed and dangerous, police said.

Anyone who spots Nash should not approach him, but rather call the Woodland Police Department at 360-225-8981.
