Letter: Limits restricted public viewing

This is a comment on the U.S. Open recently held at Chambers Bay in Washington state. I was there for the practice rounds. I thought the course was terrific, except it was not spectator friendly. There were holes that were off limits to the viewing public. To add to that problem was the amount of security. There were hundreds of volunteers and an equal number of cops. Local cops, county cops, and even state police. We went through metal detectors that screened us, then they searched our bags. They took our liquids (water bottles) and sunscreen. It was way too heavy-handed. I felt like I was in a militarized zone. I was glad to stay home and watch the play on television Thursday through Sunday. We could see every hole without fear of being frisked at every turn.
