Fireworks caused a fire early Tuesday morning that destroyed a classic car parked at a house in the Image neighborhood, according to fire officials.

The Vancouver Fire Department was dispatched to the blaze at 3012 N.E. 129th Ave. at about 3:30 a.m.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the backyard fire that destroyed a 1972 Chevrolet Camaro worth an estimated $15,000, Vancouver Fire Marshal Heidi Scarpelli said.

Firefighters doused the flames quickly, Scarpelli said, so that it did not spread to the house and so that nothing else was damaged or destroyed. No one was cited for the incident, Scarpelli said.

With fireworks on sale, Scarpelli said, she’s worried about the risks they present with the current weather.

“We’re really encouraging our citizens not to use fireworks this year due to the dangerous combination of the hot dry weather and the fireworks,” she said. “We’re kind of in a state of emergency locally.”

Scarpelli is asking that residents instead attend public fireworks shows.
