Weather Eye: Temperatures in the 70s for the weekend? Maybe

The Hazel Dell Parade of Bands takes place May 16 and I can guarantee nice weather and no rain. Okay, it’s a little ways out but over the past 35 years or so, only a few drips of moisture have fallen on that event. Mark your calendar.

Of course, at the rate we are going with our warm and sunny weather, why not make that prediction? We topped out at 60 degrees Wednesday under clear skies and sunshine. That followed an overnight low of 27 degrees. A nice rise, some 33 degrees. Amazing for the first week in March.

How about 70 degrees for the weekend? Sounds good to me. At least that is what some forecast charts are showing. It should be an absolutely beautiful weekend at the coast, with Sunday the warmest day. If we get a bit of offshore winds, it will be well into the 60s down there.

I see the white skirt of fresh snow on Mount St. Helen’s is lifting a bit. Yep, melting away. I mentioned here the other day that extended computer models were hinting at some rain and snow next week. That may be put off to Wednesday. I’m not holding my breath, as different models vary.

We get an extra hour of daylight in the evening hours starting Sunday. Of course, it will be a little darker in the morning hours for a while but we are gaining on those daylight hours quickly now. Spring is in full bloom almost, with some plants and trees blooming a month early. Wow. I bet many are getting itchy to work out in the garden.

I usually warn folks of frost as long as there is snow on Silver Star to our east but I don’t know what to say this year. There is no snow. We may have to forgo that bit of folklore. Weather watcher Phil Delaney near Dole Valley reported he went for a hike up Silver Star on February 24. He noted, “On my hike up Silver Star, I found not a trace of snow, even in the usual places where it lasts.”

And so it goes. Enjoy the spring weather and we’ll chat Sunday, maybe from the beach!
