A man fleeing police jumped from the 63rd Street Interstate 5 overpass onto the grassy shoulder below on Sunday night, but he was eventually taken into custody with the help of a police dog.

Clark County sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of suspicious activity near a Hazel Dell 7-Eleven, 6212 N.E. Highway 99, at about 9:15 p.m. Sunday, Sgt. Fred Neiman said.

Deputies contacted two people in a vehicle and immediately noted drug activity, Neiman said.

The driver, Robbin Carmen Brelia, 29, of Vancouver was taken into custody, but the passenger fled on foot, Neiman said.

As deputies chased the passenger, identified as 23-year-old Jamie Alejandro Vega of Vancouver, Vega jumped from the 63rd Street overpass onto the grassy shoulder of Interstate 5 and ran across all lanes of both northbound and southbound traffic, Neiman said.

At one point, Neiman said, Vega stole a bicycle from a home but abandoned it a short distance away.

A police K-9 unit tracked Vega to some bushes in the 6100 block of Northeast Sixth Avenue, Neiman said. Despite being warned that a police dog was being used, Vega refused to surrender and was bit in the leg by the dog, Neiman said.

Neiman said Vega was taken to Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center for the dog bite and then was booked into the Clark County Jail on suspicion of two counts of heroin possession, two counts of methamphetamine possession, theft of a bicycle and criminal impersonation for lying about his true identity.

Brelia was arrested on suspicion of two counts each of possession of heroin and methamphetamine.
