Letter: Respect element of Christian values

Do we live in a country where we practice freedom of religion or freedom from religion? America is a free nation, and freedom of religion is still guaranteed in the Constitution’s First Amendment. President Thomas Jefferson wrote, “The God who gave us life gave us liberty at the same time,” and asked, “Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are of God?” Although the United States was founded on a religious basis, it seems as if we are fading away from that.

Those who object to publicly displaying the phrase “In God We Trust” need to respect that our country was created with Christian ideals. The phrase “In God We Trust” is synonymous with the United States of America — it only makes sense that it should be proudly displayed in the Clark County main public hearing room. I applaud the councilors of Clark County who overturned their original decision and passed Councilor Tom Mielke’s proposal. With this being said, the people of Clark County should do the right thing and support their councilors as they display the words “In God We Trust” in their chambers.
