Officials: Yacolt house fire caused by electrical failure

Fire investigators say an electrical failure caused a fire that caused $600,000 damage to a Yacolt house and its contents.

A motion sensor for exterior lights, mounted on the southwest corner of the house, failed and caused the fire, according to Clark County Senior Deputy Fire Marshal Susan Anderson.

“It is unknown if the problem originated in the motion sensor itself, or the associated electrical connections,” Anderson said.

A neighbor called 911 to report the fire at the house, 36603 N.E. Lakeview Drive, just before 7 p.m. Friday. No one was home at the time of the fire.

“We could see the column of smoke from 3 miles away, so we knew it already had a head start on us,” Clark County Fire District 10 Chief Gordon Brooks said Saturday. “As I got closer, the flames were visible from Gabriel Road through the trees, more than half a mile away.”

Officials said the fire destroyed a third of the house and a gazebo. The rest of the structure sustained widespread smoke and water damage. Including contents lost, the damage from the blaze is estimated at more than $600,000.

Two dogs and a cat were rescued.
