The Clark County council approved on Tuesday a partnership between the Clark and Skamania County sheriff’s offices.

Clark County will use up to 15 beds in the Skamania County Jail at a price of $55 per inmate per day, according to Clark County Sheriff’s Office budget estimates.

Clark County will use the Skamania beds only when the state Department of Corrections taps the local jail for beds, according to the agreement. The state pays the county $81.67 per bed/day to house prisoners arrested for offenses such as violating their terms of release from prison.

The agreement could allow Clark County to turn an estimated $124,000 additional profit on the additional DOC offenders in 2015 and $148,000 in 2016, according to budget estimates.

Skamania County, meanwhile, would earn $252,450 in 2015 and $301,125 in 2016.

“This is another step the sheriff’s office is taking to pro-actively address our rising jail population here in Clark County,” Jail Chief Ric Bishop said.
