College Notebook: Wonderly, Smith help Sac State gymnastics set scoring record

Sacramento State University’s Kayla Wonderly matched one career high score and established another in her final home gymnastics meet as the Hornets set a school scoring record Sunday.

Wonderly, of La Center, and teammate Dallas Smith of Heisson competed at The Nest for the last time as the Hornets fell 196.350-196.000 to Utah State.

Wonderly set a career high with a 9.875 on the balance beam and claimed the first individual event victory of her career. She equaled her career high of 9.800 on bars, tying for fifth. Smith scored 9.825 on floor exercise to tie for third.

Wonderly and Smith are both graduates of CAM High School in Battle Ground.

Another CAM graduate, KayCee Gassaway of Vancouver, tied a career high with a score of 9.875 in Brigham Young University’s 196.375-196.350 win Friday over the same Utah State opponent. Gassaway also earned a season high of 9.875 on vault and scored 9.775 on bars.

Indoor track and field

Decker, SPU relay just miss All-America

Seattle Pacific University junior Lynelle Decker finished 14th in the 800 meters and helped the Falcons’ distance medley relay team to a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday in Birmingham, Ala.

The Mountain View High School graduate ran the open 800 in 2 minutes, 13.68 seconds.

Decker then teamed with Jessica Rawlins, Becca Houk and Anna Patti to just miss All-America status in the relay. Their time of 11:40.68, just 0.01 seconds behind Great Northwest Athletic Conference rival Alaska-Anchorage. The top eight finishers earn All-America status. The SPU quartet’s time was a drop of nearly seven seconds in its best of the season.

GNAC honors Porter for record in 10,000

Saint Martin’s University junior Shannon Porter was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Women’s Track Athlete of the Week after winning the 10,000 meters at the Pacific Lutheran University Invitational on Saturday in Tacoma.

The Hockinson High School graduate’s time of 35 minutes, 39.79 seconds took more than 3½ minutes off the school record of 39:15.00, eclipsed the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Division II championships by 1 minute, 16 seconds and was the eighth fastest in conference history.

NWC honors Lefever as pitcher of week

Whitworth University sophomore Makayla Lefever was named Northwest Conference Pitching Student-Athlete of the Week after posting a three-hit shutout in the Pirates’ 5-0 win Saturday over Pacific (Ore.). The Woodland High School graduate scattered three singles, struck out five batters and walked none.

When the teams played another doubleheader Monday, Lefever (8-2) allowed two hits and no earned runs in Whitworth’s 5-1 win, lowering her season earned run average to 1.39 with her seventh complete game of the season.

Golf

CCC honors Whiles as player of week

Kelsey Whiles was named Cascade Collegiate Conference Women’s Golf Player of the Week after placing second in the individual standings as Concordia University erased a nine-stroke deficit to defeat the University of Victoria at the Corban Spring Invite on March 10.

Whiles, a Hockinson High School graduate, shot 81-73-76—230 over the three rounds as the Cavaliers, ranked No. 18 in NAIA, claimed the team title by five strokes.

Also for the Cavaliers, Madison Alamillo placed 11th. The Battle Ground High School graduate shot 87-76-82—245, two strokes shy of the top 10.

Golf

Bartek helps Hornets claim tournament title

Sacramento State sophomore Chloe Bartek tied for seventh in the individual standings as the Hornets claimed their second team title of the season, winning their own Sacramento State Invitational concluding Tuesday at Sierra View Country Club in Roseville, Calif. The Columbia River High School graduate shot 79-76-75—230, her team’s third scoring golfer.

Bartek shot 14 pars and one birdie on her final round, her best of the tournament.

Sacramento State won the team title by 19 strokes over Cal State Northridge. Montana, Northern Colorado and North Dakota also participated.
