No need to turn off your cellphone during next week’s State of the City speech. Vancouver Mayor Tim Leavitt is serving his annual address with a digital twist this year.

Starting at 4 p.m. next Thursday in the lobby of City Hall, 415 W. Sixth St., the celebration of the city’s accomplishments and future opportunities will feature live interaction with the audience on mobile devices. Audience members’ tweets and Facebook posts during the event will stream live on a screen while the mayor speaks.

The city launched a social media campaign March 9 asking the public to use Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to post photos, videos or stories describing what makes Vancouver a “safe and welcoming, vibrant and prosperous city.” Some submissions will be shown during the State of the City address. (It’s not too late to participate; use the hashtag #vansoc.)

Following the speech, the public can join the mayor and City Council for an informal social hour at 5 p.m. at the Hilton Vancouver Washington’s Gray’s at the Park bar and grill, next door to City Hall at 301 W 6th St,.

The Hilton, which has created a State of the City happy hour menu for the event, will donate part of the proceeds to the Council for the Homeless, a local nonprofit that finds help and resources for people at risk of homelessness in Clark County.

Can’t make it? The speech will air live on Clark/Vancouver Television (Channel 23 and HD channel 323), which can be viewed at www.cvtv.org.

A “State of the City Annual Report to Citizens” will be posted Tuesday at www.cityofvancouver.us/vansoc. Copies of the report will be available at City Hall and other city buildings the last week of March.
