Letter: Appearance makes an impression

I have read a lot of information on the columnist Thomas Sowell lately, and since I have also had some negative thoughts about his writings, it encouraged me to do a bit of research on him.

From his picture that is displayed along with his column, it appears that he is a relatively younger man than his age. He is, at this time, 84 years old. I found many pictures of Sowell online that show an advanced age, but I don’t believe that many show him looking age 84. I am presuming that this younger-appearing photo might influence people’s opinions about his writing. Now I am not against people of any age writing columns, as I am close to reaching the age of 76 myself, but I am just against the picture’s possible effect of misleading people about his age and possible ideas or biases.

After doing my research, I find that Sowell appears to be a well-educated and qualified writer. I am, however, just a bit put off by the deceptive picture accompanying his column. It certainly could be a more accurate photo, or none at all.
