Letter: Pick up as you go, others will follow

The Columbian
Published: March 21, 2015, 12:00am

Homeless people aren’t the only ones who might litter. A March 11 story reported on “Free food fallout: Volunteers feeding homeless in Esther Short Park run into neighborhood opposition.” Ever done a cleanup along the Columbia River and picked up junk dumped by “respectable” fishermen or recreational boaters? Or cleaned up after a patriotic parade or celebration? Ask the people who organize events in Esther Short Park how many hours they spend cleaning up after people who pay to get in.

What if we all spent more time interacting with each other, regardless of our status, and did our bit to pick up after each other? Our downtown could really be the welcoming place we’d like it to be.
