SEATTLE — The Seattle City Council is expected to vote Monday to provide $34 million for a planned expansion of the historic Pike Place Market.

The Seattle Times said money from the city’s general fund will help build a new public plaza and walkway designed to connect the Market with the central waterfront once the Alaskan Way Viaduct is torn down.

The money will also help build new shops, an underground parking garage and senior housing.

Construction on the $73 million project could start as early as May.

The project site is currently a parking lot that sits below the Market, across from Western Avenue. It covers about three-quarters of an acre.
