Battle Ground — Chief Umtuch Middle School seventh-graders received a combination math and art lesson recently in their visual arts class, as their teacher, Linda Peterson, taught the students string art.

During the lesson, students learned about geometric concepts and constructed line designs using string and tiny nails. The students used different-colored strings to help show their designs’ curves, as even though the strings form straight lines between points, the different angles and positions where strings intersect give the appearance of curves.

Peterson starting teaching students string art 17 years ago after seeing an exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum.

“My goal is for students to understand the intimate relationship between art, math, and science,” Peterson said in a release from the school. “Art helps make math and science visible.”
