Community notebook: Clark County shooters qualify for Junior Olympics competition

Five shooters from Clark County have qualified for the USA Shooting National Junior Olympic Championships.

Qualifying in air rifle are Kylie Delaney, 13, Tyler Horn, 13, Casper Schadler, 15 and Kyle Ueltschi, 18.

Cordelia Schadler, 18, qualified in air pistol.

The shooters, members of Clark County Competitive Shooters who train at the Vancouver Rifle and Pistol Club, qualified based on their scores at local competitions. The four air-rifle qualifiers won first-round invitations to the nationals.

The national Junior Olympics are held at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The girls air rifle competition takes place in mid-April, the pistol competition in late-April and the boys air rifle competition in early May.

To help pay for the travel to Colorado, the club is hosting a spaghetti feed on April 24 at the 40 et 8 Bingo Lodge in Vancouver. Tickets are $15 each and available by calling 360-687-7462 or by sending e-mail at cccshooters@yahoo.com.

Prairie equestrians earn gold

Alivia Stone and Casey Kampe of Prairie’s high school equestrian team each finished with two individual gold medals after three district meets, and Prairie was the District 4 mid-sized points champion for the sixth consecutive season.

Prairie wrapped up its regular season with its third Washington High School Equestrian Teams district meet March 20-24 in Spanaway.

Stone was the gold medalist in showmanship and in stock seat equitation. Kampe won gold in break-away roping and in steer daubing. Beca Thomas won gold for Prairie in hunt seat over fences. Devon Lobato and Kylie Vroman won gold in working pairs. And the Prairie drill team won gold.

Prairie’s Casey Kampe qualified for state in figure 8, as did the birangle team of Chloe Nevins and Paige Rinta. The WAHSET state meet is scheduled for May 14-17 in Moses Lake.

In the third meet of the season, Prairie had first-place efforts in seven events.

A list of Prairie’s top-10 finishes from the March 20-24 meet, along with the steam’s district medalists, is in the Community Sports Scoreboard.

Spring break hoops camp

Registration is open for a spring break basketball camp at Washougal High School.

The Dream Team Spring Break Basketball Camp is for ages 5-18. Camp sessions are 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. April 6-8.

The camp costs $95. For participants who want to have lunch provided each day the coat is $105.

Camp director Larry Jury said he is dedicating this camp to his friend Jerome Kersey. The former Trail Blazer who died on Feb. 18 at the age of 52 was a regular speaker at Dream Team camps.
