Letter: Right-to-work lessens quality of life

What do Clark County residents need to know about so-called right-to-work laws, more accurately right-to-work-for-less laws?

First, the laws are misnamed because federal law states that no one can be forced to join a union. Right-to-work-for-less laws allow workers to pay nothing and still get all the benefits of union membership.

Second, the actual intended purpose of these laws is to weaken unions and reduce the bargaining power of working Americans. This results in lower wages, benefits and working conditions, which is good for employers but bad for working Americans whose standard of living is reduced.

Right-to-work-for-less laws have been passed by various states for a long time. The respected Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development measured nine quality-of-life indicators that ranked the 50 states as well as 100 regions around the world. It should be noted that eight of the 10 worst states in terms of quality of life were so-called right-to-work, while eight of the best 10 states in terms of quality of life were not so-called right-to-work states.

These laws will mean a reduced quality of life for Clark County residents.
