Letter: Sensors would aid drivers

Automobile accidents have many causes; those due to impaired vision (sun in the eyes, fog on the road, nighttime travel) are completely preventable.

An automobile fitted with several types of sensors, available today and inexpensive, would be able to detect every obstruction ahead of the vehicle. The displays needed are equivalent to those on an iPhone. The computers needed can be produced for pocket change. They could be assembled into a single package that would provide a clear picture of the roadway ahead, thus enhancing safe driving in conditions of poor vision.

All we need now is two things: First, the automobile manufacturers to offer such a system as an option; and second, car buyers to request it.

In the future, insurance companies will offer a significant reduction in their rates to customers owning a vehicle with this option. We can speed up the process of making safer vehicles by asking the auto manufacturers for such an option; and by asking our insurance companies to provide a reduced rate on such vehicles.

If enough of us ask, they will respond.
