A pre-dawn police chase ended in an accident on Portland’s inner southeast industrial neighborhood today.

The chase began at 6 a.m. as police responded to a burglar alarm at a business called Maids By Trade, 4439 S.E. Johnson Creek Blvd., according to a Portland Police Bureau news release.

As the first officers arrived, they saw an older Ford pickup truck pulling an empty car-carrier trailer pulling out of the parking lot. They attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver kept going. A six-mile chase ensured.

Police used spike strips to shred the truck’s tires, but the chase didn’t end until the pickup collided with a Broadway Cab taxi in the intersection of Southeast Grand Boulevard and Southeast Couch Street.

Both the driver and a female passenger got out of the pickup and tried to run, but were quickly caught by police who had flooded the area.

Streets were closed around the accident scene. Traffic is likely to be impacted for several hours.

Though an ambulance and paramedics were called to the scene to examine the suspects and the cabbie, no one was reported injured, police said.
