LA PUSH — The Coast Guard says it has called off a search for the master of a 52-foot fishing vessel that capsized and sank off the northwest Washington coast.

The initial mayday call from the boat, called the Sea Beast, came in at 3 a.m. Sunday, reporting the vessel was taking on water and that the four crewmembers couldn’t keep up with the flooding. Three managed to don survival suits and made it into the life raft, where rescuers found them, but the master was reportedly still on board when the boat capsized.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Jonathan Klingenberg said Monday the search had been called off by 9:30 p.m. Sunday with no sign of the master.

The boat, home ported in Neah Bay, sank about 12 miles off of La Push, on the northwest coast of the Olympic Peninsula. The vessel reportedly could carry up to 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel in its tanks, but no pollution had been reported.
