Letter: Storage of guns must be regulated

Tears welled up in my eyes as I read the headline ” ‘Hero’ teacher tackles shooter at North Thurston High School” across The Seattle Times Web page. How many close calls or killings do we need before we finally take some action to protect our children?

I’m an aunt of seven nieces and nephews and a retired human resources executive. I’ve had many conversations with parents concerned about gun safety risks for their children. Did you know there’s no law in Washington state that requires gun owners to safely store guns and ammunition?

During a recent visit to the eye doctor, my optometrist shared his dismay when he realized the risk he was taking with his 3-year-old twins when they visited other children where their parents have guns.

Our legislators have failed to address this issue. Isn’t it time we bring accountability to those who aren’t acting responsibly? I urge our citizens to contact their legislators and ask them to pass bills for the safety of our children and communities.
