An 18-year-old man suspected of being involved in a Monday shooting at the Grand Central Fred Meyer in west Vancouver made a first appearance in Clark County Superior Court on Tuesday. A second suspect has yet to be captured.

Alexandru V. Sambra faces allegations of second-degree malicious mischief, reckless endangerment and attempting to elude police.

The disturbance was reported about 5:20 p.m. at the grocery store, 2500 Columbia House Blvd. A man with a rifle reportedly stood up and out of the sunroof of a black sedan and shot at the building once, shattering a window near the front entrance on the store’s east side. Witnesses said there were at least two people in the vehicle, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Superior Court.

Nobody was injured.

The suspects fled the scene, but not before their vehicle description and license plate number were dispatched to law enforcement. Vancouver police Sgt. Therese Kubala found the vehicle traveling away from the scene and attempted to stop it using her patrol vehicle’s lights and siren. The driver failed to yield, however, and sped up to evade capture, court records said.

Police identified Sambra as the owner of the vehicle and contacted him at his home. He admitted he was the driver and his friend shot out the window. He also said he drove away from the scene and refused to stop when an officer attempted to pull him over, according to the affidavit.

Vancouver police spokeswoman Kim Kapp said police recovered a pellet gun during Sambra’s arrest.

On Tuesday, Judge Derek Vanderwood found probable cause for the allegations against Sambra.

Sambra did not qualify for a court-appointed attorney and must hire his own. Vanderwood ordered Sambra remain in custody in lieu of $30,000 bail.

He is scheduled to be arraigned May 15.
