Sugar scrub refreshes your skin

For those of us who’ve been living in a box (or under the fluorescent lights of a windowless office) and were otherwise unaware: It’s officially sandal season — or will be soon depending on your geographic locale.

My feet were in dire need of a pedicure, a fact I naturally discovered as I was putting on my sandals a good 20 minutes before I had to leave for an event. Wandering around the house barefoot is one thing; going out in public where others might see my hobbitlike resemblance was a no-go.

Being short of time, I went the quick and easy route by buffing up my feet with a homemade sugar scrub. Composed of sugar, oil and essential oil (for fragrance), this scrub is exactly like the expensive scrubs available at spas and department stores, for a mere fraction of the cost. Even better, this scrub is simple to make, and works perfectly on hands, body, face and feet.

What you’ll need:

• ½ cup sugar (white or brown)

• ¼ cup oil (olive, coconut or almond oil)

• Essential oil (optional)

Mix ingredients together and you’re done. The sugar won’t dissolve in the oil and acts as an exfoliant. The oil moisturizes your skin, leaving it silky smooth. And the essential oil is added for fragrance.

To use:

Rub the scrub on your skin in a circular motion, then rinse completely.

The scrub can be stored in an airtight container on your countertop and will last up to two months.
