EUGENE, Ore. — Workers at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart hospitals in Eugene and Springfield are set to vote about whether to unionize.

The Eugene Register-Guard reported that frontline workers like housekeepers and certified nursing assistants will vote in late May.

The workers say they want improved staffing, better health insurance coverage and higher wages.

One worker said some departments have gone for years without a raise, but PeaceHealth spokesman Jim Godbold said that isn’t the case.

He said employees with satisfactory performance reviews have received 2 percent raises during the past two fiscal years.

Organizers representing about 1,000 Sacred Heart workers filed a petition to unionize recently with the National Labor Relations Board. They want to join Service Employees International Union Local 49, part of the largest health care union in the country.
