Portland police say an officer has shot a person who broke into someone else’s home after reportedly cutting himself with a knife.

Sgt. Pete Simpson said in a news release Sunday afternoon the shooting happened about 2:15 p.m., but no details about what prompted the shooting were immediately available. The subject’s age and condition were not released.

Police said officers initially were responding to a report that the subject had been cutting himself at one home, which he had fled. They soon received another report — from a woman who said someone with a knife had broken into her house.

She was able to escape with her two young children.

Simpson said the shooting occurred as police began to cordon off the home with the subject inside.

Officers provided medical assistance and the man was taken to a hospital.

Simpson says homicide detectives are responding to conduct an investigation.
