Lacrosse/rugby roundup: Camas, Union reach lacrosse quarterfinals

Camas and Union advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division II Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association state playoffs.

Union topped Meadowdale 16-6 in a first-round match played May 16 at Camas High School. Union will travel to Sumner for a 7 p.m. quarterfinal match on Saturday.

Against Meadowdale, Union scored five goals in a three-minute span of the first quarter to set the tone. Parker Lindhorst, Andrew Harrah and Chandler Lindhorst scored three goals apiece to lead Union. Trey Chambers, Nathan Lindquist and Payton Summers added two goals each and Sam Rink scored once. Jonathan Stell fielded 12 ground balls and goalie Dominic Mendez had 11 saves.

Camas, which beat Columbia River last Tuesday to clinch its state spot, beat visiting Gonzaga Prep 10-5 in the first round of state. Camas will host Juanita of Kirkland at 2 p.m. Saturday at Camas High School’s Cardon Field.

In the win over Gonzaga Prep, Matt Welinski scored four goals and Austin Garwood three. Goalie Jake Lambert made 10 saves, Matt Thomas fielded eight ground balls and Kannon Burchette won six faceoffs.

On May 12, Camas defeated Columbia River 12-5 to earn its state playoff spot. In that match Welinski scored three goals, Julian Svaricek fielded eight ground balls, Austin Garwood won nine faceoffs and Lambert made 14 saves.

Girls lacrosse

Four members of the Evergreen Lacrosse Club team were named to the Nisqually Conference all-conference team.

Selected were midfielder Olivia Hood (Mountain View), midfielder Madeline McKinnon (Union), defender Grace Davis (Union) and goalkeeper Molly Johnson (Evergreen).

This was the ninth season that Evergreen Public Schools has had a girls lacrosse team, and the fourth year in a row that the team qualified for the state playoffs.

High school rugby

Union finished off an unbeaten regular season with a dominating performance against Reynolds on Saturday.

The 74-0 win (officially 35-0 in the Rugby Oregon standings) completed a 10-0 regular season for Union. Tries from 11 different players were the result of excellent teamwork and a strong week of practice according to coach Dave Curle.

Union is ranked 30th in the most recent Goff Rugby Report national rankings of single-school rugby teams.

In the state semifinals for the Rugby Oregon youth championship, Union will take on the Portland Pumas at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Lents Park in southeast Portland. Union defeated the Pumas 42-7 on March 21 in the season opener.

The semifinal winner will play for the state title at 3 p.m. on May 30 at Lents Park.

The Bowl semifinals, for teams that finished fifth through eighth in the standings, will be played at on Saturday at Lents Park. Battle Ground will face Reynolds at 11:15 a.m., and Prairie will face Lincoln at a time to be determined in those semifinal matches.

Prairie lost to third-place Oregon City 27-7 in the final regular-season game. Jordan Marti scored Prairie’s only try.

Battle Ground completed the regular season with a 51-5 win over Canby. Jonathon Bryant played four positions to cover for injuries. Freshmen Brock Robinson and Kevlar Anderson had strong games according to coach Brett Major.

Clark County 64, East Oregon 27 — In the playoffs for the Rugby Oregon Club Championship Division, the Clark County Warriors won the shield final for seventh place. Details were not reported to The Columbian.

Girls rugby — Battle Ground capped its season with a 35-29 win over Reynolds in the bowl final to earn fifth place in the high school girls state tournament. Details from the match were not reported to The Columbian.
