Volunteers aim to clean up childhood poverty

Group spruces up grounds at YWCA

Stefanny Caballero, left, and Sierra Smith, along with other volunteers, flocked to the YWCA Clark County on Wednesday afternoon to spruce up the grounds with fresh paint, plants and flowers, garden tools and good clean dirt.

They were rounded up for this afternoon of service by United Way of Columbia-Willamette in anticipation of a regionwide charitable giving event that’s underway today. It’s called “More than 24” — the shorthand being “>24,” as you can see on the T-shirts — and the idea is to volunteer for a favorite charity working against childhood poverty, and then donate more than $24 to the effort, too.

The United Way held a service project this week in each of the four counties it serves — Clark, Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington. The YWCA Clark County, which works to empower women, defeat racism and promote peace and justice for all, is a longtime beneficiary.

To learn more and make a donation, visit MoreThan24.org. The event is similar to the Community Foundation for Southwest Washington’s own “Give More 24!” event, set for Sept. 24 this year.
