Letter: Upgrade safety as next step

In regards to the May 17 article “Culture of secrecy shrouds Port of Vancouver” regarding the Port of Vancouver’s approval of the oil terminal, I’d like to point out on Page A6 of the same day, the article “Feds: Amtrak must expand speed control at site of deadly crash in Pa.” Amtrak, like many others, is showing a reactive mind set — wait until eight people die, then upgrade the safety features.

As we are assured by Tesoro and Savage there is no possibility of train derailment and contamination of our towns on the rail line, do they, like Amtrak, wait until a derailment and people dying before saying we are speeding up safety measures. Tesoro and Savage companies and the railroads are just holding their breaths before another major derailment.

The port’s actions resemble the actions of our present president. As you can tell, my husband and I do not want the terminal. My thanks to The Columbian and its investigative reports. Now what do we do?
