Letter: Fund retirement contributions

The Columbian
Published: May 21, 2015, 5:00pm

I am a home care worker in Washington state. I care for some of the most vulnerable members of our communities.

State-paid home care workers negotiated for a contract, which provided a modest retirement contribution to help care workers save for retirement, but the Senate Republicans support a budget that says we can never retire as home care workers. They refused to support funding these retirement contributions. This is so wrong.

We need the state to stand up and take a good look at the real work the home care worker does for the people. I have taken care of others for many years and feel I deserve a retirement same as anyone.

Home care workers are truly needed in this world. We are well-trained to care for you. But the Legislature is not standing behind the state’s word. It is time for Olympia to stand up and honor the hard and honest work the home care worker gives to anyone who needs us, so we can retire with dignity.
