Letter: Presumptive attitude disengages

I don’t like categorical statements, such as Roy Schimelpfenig’s assertion in a May 18 letter “Make room for God” that “Without God, however, there is no moral code.”

For one thing, secular humanists have a very strong moral code. For another, he states that this country’s survival “is attributable to the moral code it has lived by, until recently.”

Well, where was “God” when the Native Americans’ land was stolen and they were shoved onto reservations with horrible living conditions? Or was that recent? Where was “God” when people were burned at the stake by the “God-fearing” people of Salem? Or was that also recent? And where is “God” today when $300,000 is being considered to provide offices with windows for our county officials who, no doubt (“In God We Trust,” after all) expect “God” to provide it for them, when the homeless problem has not been seriously addressed?

He goes on to trash the liberals and progressives, when if he would, as he writes, “decipher the goals of liberalism,” he would see that they are in line with those of Jesus; that is, if he would take the time to read Jesus’ teachings. The only specific he gives in his letter is regarding abortion. So, as he feels abortion is wrong, I suggest that he never have one.
