Union’s White makes big comeback

“I feel great. A lot better than last year.”

Absolutely.

Tyler White looks a lot better than last year, too. Because a baseball player always looks better when he is on a baseball field.

White returned to field this year to play with the Union Titans.

“I was still part of the team last year, but it’s great to be back,” White said. “I feel like these guys are my brothers. It’s great to be competing with them.”

White is competing cancer-free, too.

Diagnosed with Hodgin lymphoma in December 2013, White hoped to get treatment and play last spring. It did not work out that way.

“I can take time and listen to my body,” White told The Columbian last year when he and the baseball community were highlighted for battling cancer together. “Sacrificing one season of baseball for my whole life … you gotta do what you gotta do.”

He is trying to make up for that lost season by making the most of this season. Initially in a platoon role, he quickly became a full-time starter for the Titans, helping them win the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League title, a district crown, and earning a trip to the state playoffs.

“Seeing him back on the field, I think it inspired all the kids,” Union coach Ben McGrew said.

All this is bonus, too. The best news for White came last fall at his most recent test. All clear. He described himself as in remission.

“Nothing shows up. From now on, go get another (scan) just to check on it,” White said.
