Vancouver district planning school facilities upgrades

Vancouver Public Schools is undergoing a facilities planning process to address bringing its school facilities up to contemporary standards. At a community design symposium May 27, about 70 people will examine current trends and best practices in elementary school design. The by-invitation-only group includes students, parents, teachers, principals, administrators and community partners.

Robert Barr, from the College of Education at Boise State University, will speak about creating schools with an accepting environment where students can thrive.

Education facility planners from LSW Architects will provide sketches and illustrations to help participants visualize the ideas discussed.

The district’s public discussion began last fall at a symposium focused on how contemporary school buildings can best support learning. An online survey generated about 1,500 comments regarding school needs.

If approved by the superintendent and school board, a bond measure to pay for school construction and facility improvements could go before voters in 2016.
