Microsoft, Salesforce far apart on price in deal talks

SEATTLE — Microsoft and Salesforce.com held talks about the Redmond company purchasing its smaller rival, CNBC reported Friday, the latest turn in weeks of chatter about a potential sale of the San Francisco company.

The two sides failed to reach a deal and talks broke off, the financial news network reported. Microsoft was said to be willing to offer about $55 billion, while Salesforce is said to have held out for as much as $70 billion.

Bloomberg News reported last month that Salesforce had hired advisers to field potential takeover offers, with subsequent news reports suggesting Oracle as a potential bidder and conflicting reports about Microsoft’s interest.

Spokespeople for Microsoft and Salesforce declined to comment Friday.

Salesforce is the leader in sales of software that helps salespeople track leads and interactions with potential customers, a market in which Oracle, Microsoft, and others also compete.
