Letter: Settle bridge future in the east

The Columbian
Published: May 24, 2015, 5:00pm

When a new Interstate 5 bridge is built in 20 years, it will be built with two additional lanes in each direction, and it will be high enough to accommodate river traffic. Oregon will add more lanes into downtown Portland. It will be done right to accommodate all types of traffic, including light rail.

Today, both I-5 and Interstate 205 are reaching maximum capacity within five years. Today, citizens of Clark County and many in Oregon are saying we need a bridge at 192nd Avenue. It is time The Columbian and our elected officials pay attention to what is really going on and get behind starting a new bridge crossing at 192nd Avenue to Interstate 84 in Oregon. Do it now, before the traffic gridlock happens and nothing can be done.

It is past time for the economies of Oregon and Washington to start planning for a large influx of California companies and people to start moving up here due to their drought and overpopulation and the high cost of doing business in California. Now is the time to work together for both states to prosper over the next 20 to 30 years.

I-205 was designed to accommodate light rail. Now may be the right time to get it added. Are we adding this to our 20-year plans?
