A customer attempting to thwart a robbery was stabbed Tuesday afternoon at the iQ Credit Union near the Westfield Vancouver mall.

A man walked into the credit union, at 7017 N.E. Vancouver Mall Drive, wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt. An employee told him to remove his hood because they are not allowed to be worn inside the business, said Vancouver Police Department spokeswoman Kim Kapp.

The man demanded money and got an undisclosed amount of cash. When a customer tried to intervene, he stabbed the customer in the stomach with a large knife. Kapp said the male victim was conscious and talking when emergency responders arrived. His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Credit union staff activated a panic alarm at 12:58 p.m.

The suspect ran from the bank with the cash and reportedly took a cab to Applebee’s on Northeast 112th Avenue near state Highway 500, where he continued on foot, according to emergency radio traffic.

Detectives got a surveillance photo of the suspect, which was sent to patrol officers canvassing the area and to media. The suspect was not located.

The incident put the credit union in lockdown for several hours, as detectives kept employees and customers who witnessed the incident inside the business for interviews.

With no caution tape or much patrol vehicle presence, people approached the credit union throughout the sunny afternoon. An officer stood just outside the doors, however, informing them that the credit union was closed.

Detectives with the Major Crimes unit are investigating the incident and asking anyone with information on the suspect’s identity or whereabouts to call the police tip line at 360-487-7399.
