D.C. United at Timbers

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Providence Park.

TV / radio: Root Sports, cable Channel 34 / AM 750.

Tickets: Timbers.com, 503-553-5555. Very limited availability.

Match notes: The midweek match features the top team in the Eastern Conference and the bottom team in the West. The Timbers (3-5-4, 13 points) return home after three consecutive road games produced one win and two losses. Diego Valeri is out with a sprained ankle suffered in the first half of Saturday’s loss in Toronto. Coach Caleb Porter said Valeri is also expected to miss Saturday’s match at Colorado. Porter said the injury is not major, but could sideline Valeri for one to three weeks. Team captain Will Johnson could make his season debut tonight. Porter said Johnson will play either today or Saturday, but not in both matches as he works back from the broken leg suffered in September. Porter has been emphasizing the importance of the scoring the first goal, something Portland has done four times through 12 matches, including all three of its wins. In the recent losses at Houston and at Toronto, the Timbers fell behind 1-0 inside the first 10 minutes, which Porter said allows the opponent to bunker in defensively. With 10 goals through 12 games, the Timbers now have the second lowest goals per game average in the league. Portland’s attacking players have scored only seven goals, four of those from Fanendo Adi.

D.C. United match notes: United (6-2-4, 22 points) comes to Portland following a come-from-behind 1-1 draw against New England. Chris Rolfe (three goals, three assists) leads the United attack. Like Portland, D.C. is missing several important attacking players due to injury, including Argentine forward Fabian Espindola and Eddie Johnson. Johnson (heart condition) has not played this season. Goalkeeper Bill Hamid has four shutouts and has been scored on eight times in the 10 games he has played. United has never won at Portland (two losses, one draw).
