Fort Vancouver’s Spencer Tibbitts is within striking distance of another state golf championship.

But, then again, so is Camas’ Brian Humphreys, Hockinson’s Diego De La Torre and King’s Way Christian’s Clayton Rajewich.

Tibbitts, the defending 3A state champion, finished Wednesday with a first-round 71 at the Class 3A state tournament at Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Kennewick. He trails just co-leaders Austin Brown of Southridge and Sam Warkentin of Bainbridge by two shots.

Three other golfers — Columbia River’s Nick Ayres and Spencer Long and Fort’s Trent Standard — also made the first-day cut in the 3A tournament.

In the boys 4A tournament at The Creek at Qualchan in Spokane, Humphreys is in a five-way tie for second after shooting a first-round 69. Chris Mogg of Skyline leads with a 68. Union’s Eddie Abellar also made the first-day cut.

De La Torre also is in a five-way tie for second in the 2A tournament at Liberty Lakes Golf Course in Spokane. De La Torre shot a 69 and trails first-round leader Aaron Whalen by three shots. Bryce Samwel of Washougal, Landon Joy of Hudson’s Bay and Woodland’s Ryan Sturdivan and Jon Watts made the cut.

Rajewich was the lone local to make the cut in the 1A tournament at Sun Willow Golf Course in Pasco. Rajewich shot a 73, good for fifth place and three shots off the lead set by Ryan Maine of Freeman.

No local girls golfers were within 12 shots of the lead after the first day of their tournaments.

In the 4A girls tournament at Indian Canyon Golf Course in Spokane, Taylor Hartley and Reilly Whitlock of Union and Camas’ Hailey Oster, Connie Wang and Elise Filuk all made the cut.

Bridget Standard of Fort Vancouver and Kaitlyn Michaelson of Prairie made the cut at the 3A event at Horn Rapids Golf Course in Richland.

Hockinson girls had four golfers — Shelby LaTourrette, Cara Christensen, Cameron Bielat and Hallie Escola — make the cut at the 2A tournament at MeadowWood Golf Course in Spokane, putting the Hawks in contention for the team title. Woodland’s Faith Udy and Kayla Moody, as well as Ridgefield’s Coty Flack also made the cut.

All tournaments conclude Thursday.
