SALEM, Ore. — The man who leaked thousands of emails from the personal account of former Gov. John Kitzhaber to a Portland newspaper is coming forward publicly.

Michael Rodgers tells Willamette Week that he wants to speak publicly because he’s worn down from isolation and investigation.

Rodgers is on paid leave from his job as a senior administrator overseeing state technology.

He says he gave Kitzhaber’s emails to a reporter from Willamette Week because he was concerned that the then-governor was trying to delete public records, and that his superiors would allow it to happen.

The day after the newspaper reported Kitzhaber’s request to delete his personal emails from state servers, the governor announced his decision to resign.
