Community notebook: Local Pop Warner teams advance to Corvallis regionals

Regional playoff games will take place Saturday and Sunday at Oregon State University’s Reser Stadium in Corvallis as area Pop Warner football teams compete for spots in the regional finals on Nov. 21 in Camas.

In the Pee Wee division for ages 9-12, the two East Vancouver Venom Pee Wee Division teams will begin their playoffs. The Venom Blue will play at 5:45 p.m. Saturday in a Division III playoff game against the Mid Valley Saxons. At 8 p.m. Saturday, the Venom Charcoal will take on the Mid Valley Bulldogs in a Division II game. The Venom teams are the only Pee Wee division teams this season in Clark County.

The local Great Northwest Conference Pop Warner playoffs wrapped up on Sunday at District Stadium in Battle Ground. In the Junior Pee Wee division for ages 8-11, the Camas Jets beat the Vancouver Warrior Eagles 26-6 for third place. In the championship game, the Kelso Junior Hilanders beat the Portland Steelers 14-6. Both teams in that championship game advance to regional playoff games on Saturday in Corvallis.

In the Mitey Mite Division for players ages 7-9, the Vancouver Warrior Eagles and the Portland Steelers will travel to Corvallis for Sunday morning games.

On Nov. 8, the Warrior Eagles beat the Portland Steelers in the Mitey Mite championship game.

In other Mitey Mite Bowl games on Sunday at District Stadium in Battle Ground, the Camas Jets beat the East Vancouver Venom, the North County Wildcats No. 1 beat the Longview Broncos, and North County Wildcats No. 2 beat the Kelso Junior Hilanders.

At the Mitey Mite level, no final scores are recorded.

The Nov. 21 games at Camas’ Doc Harris Stadium will determine representatives for the Pop Warner Super Bowl in Florida.

Race to Remember draws 90 runners

Ron Vellek of Vancouver won Saturday’s Race to Remember 11-kilometer race. The 46-year-old finished in 44 minutes and 56 seconds.

Kelly Cole, 37, of Vancouver was the women’s winner of the 11-K race. Her time was 50:10. She was fifth overall among 41 finishers of the race.

In the 5-kilometer Race to Remember, Robert Roper, 39, of Vancouver won with a time of 19:36. The second finisher was Madeleine Sellers, 57, of Vancouver. Her time was 22:15. A total of 50 runners finished the 5-K course.

The runs took place in advance of Saturday’s Veterans’ Parade at Fort Vancouver.

CCRC fall runs continue

The Clark County Running Club’s series of Saturday morning races will hit the Salmon Creek Trail at 10 a.m. on Saturday. There will be 3- and 6-mile options that begin and end near Klineline Pond at Salmon Creek Community Park, 1112 N.E. 11th St.

Last Saturday’s Lewis River 5-mile Run was won by Mario Beaudoin of Camas in 28 minutes and 59 seconds. Results of the race are in the Community Sports Scoreboard.

Youth lacrosse clinics slated

Vancouver Youth Lacrosse received a $500 grant from U.S. Lacrosse to help introduce children to the sport. The grant includes 18 soft lacrosse sticks designed for teaching girls and boys to throw and catch lacrosse balls.

The sticks will be used this fall during Vancouver Youth Lacrosse introductory clinics for elementary and middle school students. The free clinics are scheduled for noon on Nov. 29, Dec. 6, Dec. 13 and Dec. 20 at Salmon Creek Indoor Sports. Participants should wear athletic clothes and bring their own mouth guard.
