PORTLAND — The state medical examiner’s office says the man who was fatally shot by police near Good Samaritan Medical Center pointed a gun at officers and intended for police to kill him.

The Oregonian reports deputy medical examiner Dr. Cliff Nelson has ruled the Friday death of 51-year-old Michael Gregory Johnson a suicide based on those findings. Nelson says Johnson died of multiple gunshot wounds, none of which were self-inflicted.

Witnesses say Johnson was screaming and holding a gun to his head in a parking lot near Good Samaritan.

Police say Johnson fired shots into the ground as responding officers tried to talk to him.

Officers fired at Johnson after police say he pointed a gun at them. He died at the scene.

The shooting remains under investigation.
