Ridgefield’s proposed budget $10.5M higher than this year’s

A growing Ridgefield continues to see its budget increase, with 2016 spending estimated at $25 million — an increase of $10.5 million from this year.

City staff say residential development and industrial expansion are driving higher revenues through sales and property taxes. Retail sales tax revenues are expected to increase 14 percent next year. That allowed Ridgefield to budget for a new police sergeant, which will bring the department up to 11 employees.

Much of the budget’s growth is due to $10 million in infrastructure projects, which is nearly double 2015’s spending on such projects. That includes the $3 million proposed for planning an outdoor sports complex and $2.5 million, largely from grants, for the roundabout at 35th Avenue.

The operating budget, including the more malleable general fund, is growing by $2.1 million.

A property tax increase of 1 percent is likely, as is a stormwater rate increase of 7 percent, or 50 cents per month, according to city staff.

Utility taxes are set to remain the same.

A budget hearing will be held at the 6:30 p.m. city council meeting Thursday at the Ridgefield Community Center, 210 Main St., Ridgefield.
