Letter: Deploy Congress into battle

In the Nov. 9 story “War powers issues dog Congress members,” Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., was accurate when he said, “We are forcing people to be deployed far from home in a theater of war, and risking their lives and losing their lives, and members of Congress are like, ‘I’m afraid of this vote because somebody might try to hold me accountable for it.’ “

That is just about the most honest statement to come out of Washington, D.C., in years.

In keeping with political-correctness and non-discrimination, a Congressional lottery should be established without exception, when we have troops on foreign soil and shots are being fired. This lottery would kick in and randomly select 10 percent of sitting congressmen and congresswomen, who would be required to serve on the front lines for a year, or the conclusion of the conflict. If they were unable to walk, they could ride in a vehicle. Since this is an age of electronics communication, they could carry on with their congressional duties.

Possibly, if they were required and subjected to being picked to serve in various conflicts, that might influence their thoughts on starting and extending wars.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
