Letter: More funding needed to fight crime

Did you know that crime is on the rise in downtown Vancouver? Unfortunately, ever since the entertainment district started attracting large crowds, things such as fights, drunk driving, drive-by shootings, and other emergency situations have occurred. On top all of this, many business owners are afraid to alert the police in fear of their liquor licenses being revoked.

The Vancouver Police Department also lacks the funding to designate sufficient amounts of police to the entertainment district on Friday and Saturday. In order to fix the issues at hand, we need to involve many parties. We need to require businesses to alert the police if they witness a crime of any sort. We need to convince city hall to pass a law that holds businesses accountable for not complying with this request. We also need to put more funding into the police force so that they can hire a couple of extra officers and station them in the downtown district.

In order to fund this, we could allow for property taxes in all of Clark County to be slightly higher and then allocate the tax money to the police forces. If we do these things, crime should be dramatically reduced.
