COUGAR — Fishing season in Swift Reservoir on the upper North Fork of the Lewis River will stay open through Dec. 31, a one-month extension.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife announced the extension on Monday.

The 4,500-acre reservoir was stocked with almost 52,000 catchable-size rainbow trout in late May. However, due to the drought, the boat ramp was largely unusable from early July until early November, resulting in a minimal harvest.

The reservoir is within 10 feet of full pool. Boat launching is possible until the reservoir is 25 feet below full pool.

The daily limit is 10 trout. Only adipose fin-clipped rainbow may be retained. Young coho and chinook in the reservoir as part of the reintroduction effort also may be retained, but all salmon must be larger than 15 inches. The salmon count as part of the trout daily limit.

PacifiCorp, the utility that operates Swift Forest Park, will keep the boat ramp open plus will allow bank access at Swift Dam from sunrise to sunset.
