Israel enjoys a degree of military superiority in the Middle East that is not seriously challenged by any of its regional rivals, Iran included. It is a fully fledged nuclear weapons state in the sense of possessing a hundred or so deliverable atomic devices, even if its political leaders like to play elaborate word games about this issue.
Although it is a territorially small nation by global standards, Israel approaches superpower status in terms if its military capabilities. If Israel nevertheless faces genuine security dangers, as it does, then its source must be looked for elsewhere than in conventional military power.
Demographically, Arabs are increasing their numbers much faster than are Jews throughout the whole of the Palestine-Israel territory.
Israel’s alleged “right” to permanently occupy the West Bank, Golan Heights and east Jerusalem is recognized only by itself. Not even its patrons in Washington, D.C., go that far. Israel maintains this highly dubious status quo by force and force only.
Inevitably, Israel’s colonial-style rule must contend with the resistance of those who have been colonized. For this condition, Israel’s regime has only itself to blame.
