SEATTLE — A new grey wolf pack has been confirmed in the Okanogan County, bringing the state’s wolf pack count up to 17.

The Seattle Times reports that pack was confirmed Tuesday after a cluster of public wolf sightings in Methow, near the towns of Twisp and Omak.

Federal and state wildlife agents plan to monitor the new pack, called the Loup Loup pack, over the winter and plan to put a radio collar on one of the wolves in the summer of 2016.

The state most recently counted the number of wolves at a minimum of 68 in Washington in 2014. There will be anew count in the spring.

Wolves were shot, poisoned and trapped nearly to extinction in the state in the 1920s and 1930s.
