Letter: Congress’ hypocrisy is showing

By

Congress, including U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, has said that if President Obama will agree to cut Medicare and Medicaid, it would be willing to raise the debt ceiling. The debt is money that Congress has already agreed to spend, but did not fund.

Demonstrating their attitude of disdain for the middle class and people on Medicare or Medicaid, members of Congress chose to make these people suffer for Republicans’ political gain.

In addition to this hypocrisy, Congress demonstrated that the above is not a fluke by voting to repeal the federal estate tax. Republicans prefer the term “death tax” because it sounds like it might apply to many more estates, possibly even to everyone.

The estate tax, according to the Bank of America, applies to less than 1 percent of Americans. The total repeal would cost the American taxpayers no less than $22 billion a year. Forbes magazine states the beneficiaries total about 5,400 families, who would reap millions apiece from this repeal. Compare the total U.S. population of 325 million to 5,400 families. So many people would have to sacrifice greatly for the benefit of the few already extremely wealthy people.

Herrera Beutler voted for both these measures. I wonder if her personal political gains have clouded her empathy for the people she is suppose to represent.
