Letter: Necessities filled by railroads

By
Published:

Many express opposition to the trains carrying oil and coal through our area, fearing accidents or health issues. We have more health hazards in our own home than those created by passing trains.

The railroads are well maintained, and equipment is renewed to keep the trains and rails safe. I grew up in the Midwest during the Depression years, and coal was a necessity for heat in the harsh winters. One globe light to a room was normal, replacing oil lamps, which were used also.

Without the railroads to bring in supplies, we would be without the amenities we have today. There would be no gas or oil for cars or trucks to transport commodities. Would this generation be happy to live in those conditions?

We all knew where the railroads existed when we moved here. If we feel that they are an inconvenience or health hazard, we have the option of moving.

The railroads are a necessity to our lives and future.
