Bremerton seeks $400K from EPA to assess properties

BREMERTON — Bremerton city officials hope to obtain a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency to clean up an overgrown, oil-contaminated acre of waterfront property in the Anderson Cove neighborhood.

The Kitsap Sun reported that the property must be assessed to determine how that cleanup can happen. The site once served as a petroleum storage facility.

The $400,000 grant would pay for an assessment, and similar assessments of other properties in the city.

Officials have eyed the Anderson Cove site as a possible extension of the new park next door, but nothing can happen until remediation occurs.

The project is one of four ideas officials hope to include on the application for the grant. On Monday, city staff will hold a public meeting to discuss the ideas.
